According to notes in the Warbook, the subjects of this photo are Army GIs going to the front lines via Jeep in Southern France. Based on other images that are very close to this one, the photographer is believed to be Dale Rooks, who was traveling with Jack Baker at the time. This image was likely taken near Sainte Maxime in the last two weeks of August 1944.
About John Baker’s Warbook
The Warbook is a collection of approximately 150 original photographs taken during World War II revolving around the travels of Coast Guard cutter USS Duane. This book was compiled by my grandfather John Baker, who is the subject of many photos. Each image and caption from the book will be sequentially posted on this blog, along with other historical research when possible.
